Oxidised Pyrite
A beautiful natural pyrite specimen that has been semi-oxidised naturally by the ocean. Over time, the coastal environment has worked its magic on this piece, creating a warm, earthy patina that contrasts beautifully with the remaining metallic lustre of the pyrite crystals.
This natural oxidation process is entirely unique to each specimen — no two pieces age the same way, making this a truly one-of-a-kind treasure from the New Zealand coastline.
- Semi-oxidised naturally by the ocean
- Unique coastal patina
- Natural, untreated specimen
- Perfect for collectors and nature lovers
Pyrite is often called “Fool’s Gold” for its bright, metallic shine, but this specimen tells a different story. Ocean exposure has slowly reacted with the iron in the crystal, building up a soft rust-brown patina over time while pockets of the original silvery-gold lustre still show through underneath.
Because this process happens naturally and can’t be repeated in a lab, oxidised pieces like this one are harder to find in good condition than standard pyrite. It’s a great pick if you want a specimen that looks different from typical pyrite — more earthy, more textured, with real geological history written into its surface.
Display it as-is to keep the current patina. Further oxidation will continue slowly over time, which is part of its character, not a flaw.
