NZ Pyrites is run by Matias and Whetu, co-owners who personally do the collecting, prepping, and polishing.
Everything you see in our shop has been personally collected by us and other prospectors from locations across New Zealand. From rare New Zealand pyrites to quartz, agates, serpentine, calcite and other unique minerals, we love exploring our country and uncovering what nature has hidden away.
Many of our specimens are carefully cleaned, prepared and polished by hand, bringing out the natural colours, crystal formations and character of each piece while preserving what makes it unique.

Most of what we find comes down to erosion. Tide and rain slowly uncover pyrite that's been hidden in the cliffs and clay for years. We walk the coast often, sometimes daily, to reach new specimens before the ocean takes them or breaks them apart. Erosion never stops, so the zones where pyrite turns up keep shifting too. We spend a lot of time tracking where those zones move so we don't miss what the sea is about to wash away.
Large pieces are rare. Most of what erosion uncovers is small, so finding a bigger specimen still in one piece can take many days or weeks of searching.
This kind of collecting isn't without risk. The land here is unstable, and landslips happen often. The same erosion that reveals pyrite can also bring the cliffs down without warning, so we take real care with where and when we go out.
