Serpentine Necklace
Serpentine Necklace – Collected & Carved by Gary Howse, Hokitika, New Zealand
A beautiful natural serpentine necklace, personally collected and hand-carved by Gary Howse from the Hokitika region on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Every step of this piece's journey — from the field to the finished necklace — has been crafted with care and expertise.
Gary is an experienced carver and fossicker who has travelled all across New Zealand in search of the country's finest crystals and stones. His deep knowledge of the land and passion for natural minerals means every piece he creates is selected and crafted with genuine expertise and love for the craft.
This stone is pure New Zealand serpentine, displaying its characteristic rich green tones and natural variation. Serpentine is one of New Zealand's most treasured stones, and this specimen showcases the beauty of locally sourced, hand-worked material at its finest.
The Significance of Pounamu
Serpentine is closely related to and often found alongside Pounamu — or greenstone — one of the most culturally significant stones in New Zealand. Revered by Māori for centuries, Pounamu holds deep spiritual and cultural importance and is found only in Te Wai Pounamu (the South Island of New Zealand). It is said to carry the mana (prestige and power) of the land, and has long been used to craft taonga (treasured objects) passed down through generations.
Wearing a piece of New Zealand greenstone is considered a connection to the land, the people, and the stories of Aotearoa. Each piece is believed to absorb the energy of its wearer over time, making it ever more personal and meaningful.
